EXTREME DISAFFECTION THROUGHOUT TURKEY.
HUNGER, OPPRESSION, AND OUTRAGED RELIGION.
YOUNG TURKS THREATEN TO FIRE ON COUNTRYMEN.
Times and Sydney Sun Services. (Received September 27. 9 p.m.) London, September 26.
The Salonika correspondent of the Times states that the Young Turks are threatening Constantinople with guns in order to keep the disaffected population in awe.
The correspondent adds that throughout the empire things have como to such a pass through hunger and oppression and outraged religious feeling that a general rising would follow the slightest relaxation of the German grip upon the country.
RESIGNATION OF LEADING TURKISH OFFICIALS.
PROTEST AGAINST THE CONTINUATION OF THE WAR.
Wellington, September 27. The High Commissioner reports, under date of London, September 26:
"There is increasing confidence in the ultimate success of the allies. Constantinople reports record the resignation of the Sheik-ul-Islam, the official head of the Mahommedan Church in Turkey, and Prefect Ismet Bey as a protest against the continuation of the war against the Triple Entente.
"Great importance is attached to these resignations."
