"FURIOUS DRIVING."
SPEED OF MOTOR-CARS.
MOUNT ALBERT'S PROTEST. The speed at which motor-cars were driven along the New North Road during the \ recent Avondale Racing Club's meeting was the subject of comment at a meeting of the Mount Albert Borough Council last evening. The matter was brought up by letters from Messrs. J. C. Entrican and' D. L. Thomas, who drew the council's attention to the furious driving that took place during the race period. Mr. Entrican stated that many of the cars travelled at from 30 to 40 miles per hour, and if something was not done to prevent a repetition of the occurrence serious accident would probably result. The read was also considerably damaged as the result of such traffic. The Mayor, Mr. MurdoclrMoLean, said that at 11 a.m.. and 5 p.m. on the days mentioned the cars travelled along the New North Road at a furious pace. The Police Department had been advised previously, and sent two men in uniform, but they could be seen half a mile away. In consequence the speed was lowered at the particular point at which they were stationed. The motor cyclists were the worst offenders, and some of them travelled at 60 miles an hour. In reply to a question he stated that the matter of having a uniform by-law regarding the control of motor traffic had been referred to the Suburban Local Bodies' Association. It seemed to him, however, that it was a dying body. The late president of the association, Mr. P. L. Armitage, was away at the front, and since then no meeting of the association had been called. He thought that if something was not done by this body the council would have to take the matter in hand and fix a reasonable rate of speed by means of a by-law. Eventuallv it was decided to write to the Local Bodies' Association requesting it to bring up the question of the speed of motor-cars with a view to fixing a reasonable uniform rate of speed.
