LAKE TAKAPUNA WATER
SUPPLY TO DEVONPORT.
NEED FOR REDUCTION.
PUMPING OF SEWAGE.
The Lake Takapuna Board of Control met yesterday afternoon. There were present: Messrs. H. M. Skect, Commissioner of Crown Lands, in the chair; \V. Blomfield, Takapuna; W. Wallace, Birkenhead; W. Handley, Devonport; and A- E. Greenslade, Xorthcote.
Considerable discussion was raised by a resolution moved by Mr. Blomfield to the effect that the Devonport Borough Council should be advised that it must arrange within three months for other means than water for lifting its sewage. Mr. Blomfield said that as the summer was coming on they should not allow the wastage of water caused by this practice to continue.
Mr. Wallace moved an amendment to the effect that the Devonport Borough be asked what steps they are taking "to reduce the amount of water used in the borough. He urged that the various local bodies concerned should confer on the question of augmenting the supply of water at the lake.
Mr. Handley said that he recognised that the water should be conserved lor use in the summer, and stated that the Devonport Borough Council was now going into the question of providing other power for raising the sewage. The chairman said they were gradually getting over the difficulty of distributing the water where it was needed most, but the distribution had to depend on the supply in the lake. He considered that the Devonport Council should provide other means of power before the summer. The proposal was seconded by the chairman and carried.
Mr. Blomfield drew attention to the fact that pigs were being kept within a lew chains of the lake, ft waa decided to call the attention of the district "health officer to the matter with a view to having the pigs removed from the locality.
CONSTITUTION OF BOARD.
CHANGE OF CONTROL DESIRED. Matters in connection with the supply, of water from Lake Takapuna were flis-' cussed last evening at a meeting of the : Marine Boroughs Association, which was : attended by Messrs. A. M. Pickford .(Mayor of Devonport), chairman, and ;P. W. McCallum (Devonport). J. ' P. McPhail, C. E. Campbell, and E. G. Skeates (Birkenhead), G. Fraser, R. H. Hopkins, and J. B. Tmar (Northcote). The chairman said ft at some time ago Mr. Armitage, then a member of the Devonport Borough Council, prepared, a scheme for augmenting the water supply j from Lake TaKapuna by diverting the | water from the Wairau "stream into the I lake. A recommendation on the matter j from the Devonport Borough Council had j been brought before the association, and I the feasibility of the scheme was now i being inquired into by the engineer to the ! council, Mr. Lockie Gannon. The Marine Boroughs Association, as representing the ratepayers of the boroughs interested, considered that it was the body in whose hands the control of the supply from Lake- Takapuna should be vested". The association was opposed to further powers being given to the present Lake Takapuna Board of Control. Mr. Pickford moved, and Mr. Skeates seconded, a motion affirming the view that the present Board of Control is wrongly constituted, and therefore inadequate, and urging that no further powers be vested in the board until the association has further considered the whole matter of the j management of the supply. This reso-; lution was carried unanimously. A resolution was proposed by Mr. Campbell, and seconded by Mr. Hopkins, authorising the mayors of the four boroughs to proceed to Wellington immediately on the association's behalf for the j purpose of protesting against any further powers being vested in the present Board I of Control, and at the same time strongly j advocating that the Marine Boroughs• Association be aonetituted the Water Supply Board. =====
