The modification of the Russian front eastward of Vilna has been so successful that the- enemy is redoubling his effort against Dvinsk, attacking from three sides with heavy artillery, incessant bombs from aeroplanes, and also asphyxiating gases. The Germans show a persistent determination to precipitate events at Dvinsk.

The Russians in. the Friedrichstadfc district, between Riga and Dvinsk, carrying out an energetic offensive, made a great gap in the German lines, and compelled von Buelow to retreat. The Russians captured 1500 prisoners and many machine-guns.

General Ivanoff has had further successes in Volhynia and Galicia.

Dvinsk is an important fortress north and east of Vilna, on the Dvina River. It consists of four separate parts— fortress on a meadow on the right bank of the Dvina, two suburbs, and the town of Griva, on the glacis of the fortress. It is the principal strategic position for the defence of the river. Volhynia is a government near the Galician border.
