QUESTION OF CONSCRIPTION IN AUSTRALIA.
MR. FISHER EXPRESSES IRREVOCABLE OPPOSITION.
NO INTENTION OF INTRODUCING MEASURE.
(Received September 24. 10 p.m.)
Melbourne, September 24.
A deputation representing the Trades Hall Council asked the Commonwealth Prime Minister. Mr. Fisher, to make a public announcement of his attitude, and the attitude of the Government, regarding conscription.
Mr. Fisher, in reply, said :—" Ton wanted a private conversation, and I declined. This is a public question, and the only person who can announce the policy of the Government is myself, or somebody in my place. lam irrevocably opposed to conscription. I have not discussed it with my colleagues, but I am sure I speak for them when I say that no Bill will bo introduced into Parliament before those to whom we owe our positions are given an opportunity of expressing an opinion."
Mr. Fisher added that he would make the necessary announcement on the question at the proper time. Conscription would not be brought about by anything said at a public meeting. The only thing the deputation need ask was: Was it the intention of the Government to introduce a Conscription Bill?
The leader of the deputation: " Then we ask it that way." Mr. Fisher replied, "No."
