FIFTY YEARS AGO.
HOKITIKA GOLD RUSH. DIFFICULTIES OF TRAVEL. > (From the HERALD of September 14, 1565.) The firm of Butt and Anderson have placed a vessel on the berth for Hokitika, The steamer Rifleman sails on Tue* day next. The news from Hokitika is being eagerly waited for by hundreds in this city and province, who are preparing to leave their homes and families for a time in search of Southern gold. A passage direct to the Hokitika. even should the fare be a large one, will be a great saving, both in time and money, to ail such. Leaving by the steamer for Nelson, they have, on arriving in that city, to wait their chance of a passage on either the Hokitika or Grey River, according to which goldfield they "wish to proceed, and during their stay in Nelson, extending often to a period of three or four weeks, they are charged at the rate of 50s per week for the roughest- description of board and lodging, anS when they do get a passage on to the goldfields they have to pay smart!v for it.
