Mr. Justice Cooper has been elected a vice-president of the Auckland Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society.
The Son. F. W. Lang, Speaker of the House of Representatives, returned to Wellington by the mid-day express yesterday.
The Rev. George Budd, late of Feilding, arrived in Auckland yesterday afternoon and -was inducted into the charge of the Devonport Presbyterian Church last evening.
Mr. John McLachlan, for many years prior to 1908 member for Ashburton, is dead, aged 75. Mr. McLachlan lived on his farm at Doyleston, near ashburton, since 1863.
The Mayor of Auckland, Mr. J. - H. , Gunson, leaves for Wellington by the mid-day express to-day, and expects to - return to Auckland oil Thursday. This morning Mr. Gunson will visit the Maori camp at Narrow Neck.
Mr. Wesley Spragg, who, with Mr. C- J. Parr, MP., will represent the Auckland Patriotic and War Relief Association at a Dominion conference of patriotic committees to be held to-morrow, leaves for Wellington to-day by the midday express.
Mr. Robert Burns, who recently resigned on account of ill-health, from his position of president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, leaves h? the mid-day express to-morrow for Wellington, and will leave by the lonic on a trip to England. He will be accompanied bv Mrs. Burns.
Mr. D. Long, who has been' appointed secretary of the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company, in succession to Mr. H. G. Stringer, takes up his new duties on October 1. Mr. Stringer assumes the secretaryship at Feilding" of the Orona and West Coast Freezing Company- oh " November 1. . . . Mr. Horace Stebbing, who has occupied .* the positions of chief scoutmaster, chief inspector, district commander, and provincial commissioner of boy scouts in Auckland, has been appointed -organisingsecretary of the movement in Auckland. Mr. Stebbing entered upon his duties yesterday morning. Surgeon-General Henderson, who recently arrived in New Zealand" to take charge of the medical service of the Dominion, and Lieutenant-Colonel 0. M. Gibbon, efeief of the general staff, are expected ito leave for Auckland by today's mid-day express. They will inspect the Maori contingent at Narrow Neck on Wednesday, and will transact various routine business connected with the Defence Department. As this is SurgeonGeneral Henderson's first visit to Auckland, hp -will take the opportunity of acquainting himself with the officers" and ' organisation of the Auckland branch of the service he now controls.
