MODERN BUILDING LIFTS.

In conducting a modern business house economy of time and convenience of customers are two considerations of paramount importance, and few other facilities < have been proved so useful to business men in conserving these essentials as the elevator. The question of the type of the. elevator has been settled by the public voice, and choice has been the electric machine. Four distinct systems of controlling the motion of an electric lift are, now in use. but the most popular and most useful is, without doubt, the switch in car control. This system can be used for any speed ranging from nothing: up to 500 ft per minute, and is easily handled as repards accurate stopping. A machine of this class has been evolved which stands unrivalled for simplicity of design, small number of parts, directness of action, . accuracy of stopping level, sound construe-, tion, and general freedom from breakdown. Lifts of this style have been sup- : plied by the makers. Messrs. Smith, Major. ' and Stevens, Ltd., England, on the Dread- \ noughts Iron Duke, Queen Elizabeth, War- j spite. Royal Sovereign, and on 16 other j British battleships. They have been in- i stalled in the offices of the Institute of j Civil Engineers, London. A committee of. the institute made exhaustive tests of j the machines on the market, and came to | the unanimous decision that the Smith, I Major, and Stevens Reliance . elevator was most suitable for their new building, and recommended the installation of six ! of these- machines. The reliability and I safety of the lifts have been recognised in New Zealand, and the agents. The Electric Construction Company of New Zealand, High Street, Auckland, have been engaged to instal four pissenger lifts and one goods lift of this make in the new premises of Messrs. John Court, Limited. The work will be carried out under the supervision of Mr. A. J. Walker, A.M.T.E.E.. consulting engineer. Two Reliance lifts are being installed in Endean's new buildings. And one is heing placed in position in Short's new building in Queen Street. The Reliance lift is entirely of British manufacture, being made in Northampton, England. ; N
