200 MISSING SHEEP.
CHARGE OF THEFT FAILS.
DROVER AND A STRANGER.
JBT TELEGBAPH. — ASSOOAIIQS.] Waxcaxti, Thursday. The Supreme Court was occupied all dav in bearing a charge of sheep-stealine against a '.trover, Samuel Wilson. A Waverley farmer named Cava missed 200 sheep about the end of July, and subsequently ascertained that they had been tracked to Feeding and sold there. Accused admitted tracking the cheep a-. Waverley and said that he was acting on the directions of a stranger, who gave fee name of Stevens. He had taken the sheep from an accommodation paddock at Waverley, some distance from Care's farm, and had sent them forward.
The police said that no m=rg of the description of Stevens coda* be found.
Evidence -was given fay drovers that it was a usual practice to take sheep from any locality on the instruction of strangers, and forward them to various sake. Mr. Justice Edwards said that if such a practice existed it was a very dangerous and loose way of doing business. Drovers should satisfy themselves as to the rightful owners of stock.
The jury returned a verdict of not guilty.
