MAKING OF MUNITIONS. INFORMATION AWAITED. Melbourne, August 26. The Federal Defence Minister, Senator G. F. Pearce, states that the Government is still waiting details to enable the making of shells and munitions to start. The com- j mittee had done a great deal of. organisation and preparatory work, J [ but until the details are complete j they cannot proceed with the manufacture. Information regarding changes of designs and methods of manufacture of shells gained by experience in the field are still coming perience in the field are still coming to hand, and some of these changes are of vital importance.
PATRIOTIC WOMEN. ENEMY GOODS NOT WANTED. Sydney, August 26. The Women's Commonwealth Patriotic Association has adopted a resolution, pledging themselves to assist in supporting goods of Australian manufacture, and not to buy enemy goods. The association approved of the registration of -women for national service, and, if need be, compulsory service. It was also decided to hold a Housekeepers' Conference, for the purpose of advocating thrift. ENGINEERS' SERVICES. REPLY TO AN INVITATION. (Received August 27, 7.55 p.m.) , • Sydney, August 27. The Secretary of the Sydney branch of the Australasian Society i of Engineers states that many members are accepting Messrs. Maxim, Son, and Vickers's invitation to" munition-makers to proceed to Britain. ..The association has decided that the Commonwealth Government shall have first call on the services of members but if there is any surplus labour, the men will have liberty to accept Messrs. Vickers's offer.
