BUILDER'S BANKRUPTCY.
A HAMILTON FAILURE.
LOSS OF BANK-NOTES
[BY telegraph. OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
Hamilton, Friday. The official assignee for the Auckland district, Mr. W. S. Fisher, presided at a meeting of creditors to-day in the estate of William Morelarid, "builder, whose sworn statement appeared in yesterday's Herald. BanKrupt, under examination, said that a book purporting to be a statement of receipts and expenditure had been made up from time to time as transactions occurred. The assignee expressed the opinion that, for the most part, the book had been made up during the past three weeks. Questioned in regard to his loss of banknotes bankrupt said he had them in an inside coat pocket, and though he did not then consider it careless to thus carry so much money he would not do it again. The Assignee: I should think your creditors would not give you a chance. The money was not yours. It belonged to the creditors. Bankrupt said ho had no personal property. The furniture at his house was valued at not more than £20. It was purchased by his wife. He had no assets apart from his book debts, nor had he relations who were likely to come to his I assistance. J The official assignee stated that, even with every wish to give the greatest credence to the statements of bankrupt, he regarded them with the gravest suspicion. The most extraordinary feature in connection with the supposed loss of the bank-notes was that debtor never informed anyone of the loss at- the time, not even the police. ' The creditors requested the assignee to thoroughly investigate bankrupt's affairs, and, if he thought necessary, to place the matter in the hands of the Crown solicitor to take legal proceedings against him.
