AUSTRIANS REPORT GAINS BETWEEN SAN AND VISTULA
DESPERATE RUSSIAN ATTACKS IN EASTERN SECTOR.
GERMANS CLAIM RUSSIAN DEFEAT AT GRODEK.

An Austrian official communique states: " We occupied Tarnograd, on the west bank of the San, near the frontier of Russia and GaliciaThe Russians between the Lower San and the Vistula retired at several points. We occupied the Creszanow heights. Strong Russian forces appeared in the mountainous region east of Niemierow and in the Janow district) east of the San, in Russian territory.
" The Russians south of the Upper Dniester, after hard fighting, were driven towards Koloruby. Our pursuing troops reached the mouth of the Wenezska.
" Our artillery in the eastern sector inflicted heavy losses on the enemy, who is desperately attempting to throw back General Pflanger in Bukovina. We there captured eight officers and 1002 men and three
machine-guns."
A German official communique says that the British north-west of La Bassee suffered a new defeat, the attackers being annihilated, only a few escaping. The report adds that General von Mackensen defeated the Russians, and drove them from previously-prepared positions at Grodek. The newspapers state that the Grand Duke Nicholas brought' up splendidly-trained troops from Odessa to Grodek, and it is reported that he said that he will defend Lemberg at all costs.
