Southend-on-Sea is a watering place on the Essex coast of the estuary of the Thames. It is 36 miles east from London by railway, and as the nearest * as idc resort to London, it is much frequented during the holiday season. Manna Parade is a fine thoroughfare along the sea front. Several of the larger hotels along the Parade have been converted into hospitals since the outbreak of the war Weslcliff.on.Bea and Lcigh-on-Soa are western suburbs of Southend A few miles along the coast, cast from Southend, is the gunnery school ot Shotbury-
