SCOW RIMU ASHORE.

IN EXPOSED POSITION.

ATTEMPTS TO TOW OFF.

A message received in Auckland yesterday stated that the scow Kimu had gone ashore at " The Noisies," near Rakino, in the Uauraki Uulf, on Sunday morning, and arrangements were marie to despatch the Harbour .Board's tug .Te Awhina to the scene.

The tug left port at 2.30 p.m., with a quantity of provisions and several men, including a shipwright. She returned :o the harbour at 7 p.m., and Captain C. Page reported that the Kimu was lying broadside on amongst the rocks on tio beach, on the west side of the island, in an exposed position. A heavy sea was running, which prevented the tug approaching sufficiently close to make an attempt to tow the vessel off.

The men from the tug landed, and found that the crew of the Kimu were camped on the island, and had a plentiful supply of provisions. The Kimu had been lying, on the beach, fully loaded with shingle, when the strong wind and heavy sea on Sunday drove her amongst the rocks. The , crew made several attempts to kerige her o.T. hut were not successful. As the waveu were breaking right over the vessel when the tug arrived, a thorough examination of her hull could not be made, but it was seen that her stern-post and rudder had been carried away. The Te Awhina left again at midnight last night to make an attempt to tow the Kimu off at high-water this morning. The Kimu is a wooden vessel of 54 tons gross, and is owned by .Messrs. J. J. Craig, Limited. She was built at Auckland, In 1b"95, and has been regularly employed in the carriage of shingle from the gliif to Auckland.
