ALLEGED THEFT.

RINGS VALUED AT £500.

SUBSTANTIAL BAIL FIXED. Alleged to have stolen diamond and other rings of the value of £500, a well-dressed man, named Edward George Nurse, aged 31, .appeared in the Police Court yesterday morning. The rings were stated on the charge sheet to be the property of the National Bank of New Zealand. Nurse is well-known in Auckland as a wholesale jeweller, and has recently been connected with a jewellery establishment in the Strand Arcade, under the name of "Nuks." Mr. Selwyn Mays, assistant Crown prosecutor, asked for a week's remand, the accused having been only arrested on the previous evening by Detective dimming*. When Mr. It. A. Singer, who appeared for the accused, asked for bail, Mr. Mavs said that there was a great deal more at stake than indicated in the present chaise. 'There may be," he said, "many thousands of pounds involved." If the accused! was prepared to help in the investigations them would be no objection to bail. Otherwise, Mr. Mays added, he would like to see the amount of the bail made practically prohibitive. Mr, E. C. Cutten, S.M., remarked that, if the charge was correct, the accused had stolen a considerable amount of property, and it might suit him to forfeit his bait and disappear. Bail would therefore be fixed at two sureties of £500 each, and the accused would hare to report himself daily to the police.
