LENTEN ADDRESS.
The third address to men in connection with the Lenten season was delivered by Bishop Averill in the Chamber of Commerce yesterday- There was a good attendance. "The Cross in the Foreknowledge of Jesus," was the subject dealt with by the bishop, who said that when they read their Lord's life they were perfectly certain that he had foreknowledgeHe "knew what was in man, and it was H.s foreknowledge that made His sacrifice so tremendous. It was hard enough sometimes to meet difficulties and trials, but. men could not go on if they could 6ee into the future as Jesus did. Therefore, He was unique, and His sacrifice was so different from the martyrdoms. The cross was only the consummation of the sacrifice of His life. From Hiu baptism to His death, Jesus struggled to bring His human instincts into harmony with the Divine requirements. The more men realised the perfect humanity of Jesus and His human instincts, and His human will, the more they would find that Jesus would be a help to them in their daily life and in their daily struggles. The life of Jesus was overshadowed by the cross; His foreknowledge meant a life of loneliness; He felt the shame of th© cross. But, He endured all, did His duty, and did God's wilL The bishop appealed to his hearers not to withhold their admiration from Christ; not to forget His loneliness and sense of sham® of the Crow.
