DE WET'S VAIN HOPES. .
BOERS AND GERMANS. LIGHT ON THE PLOT. Bloemfontein, February 15. A witness in the trial of De Wet for treason testified that De Wet, in addressing a meeting of burghers, said that Colonel Maritz was placed by God's providence on the German border, where he could get arms and ammunition from the Germans. The Germans were always their friends, and Colonel Maritz and the German Governor had an understanding that when a Republic was established Germany would acknowledge its independence. The Boers would only have given Walfish Bay to Germany. Other evidence showed that De Wet, when addressing a commando, stated that the rebellion was planned when Hertzog left the Ministry. De "Wet, in another speech at Vachtkup, remarked that when they got to Johannesburg they would act like the Germans, and mako the capitalists pay.
