STATE CONTROL OF SHIPS GOVERNMENT ATTITUDE. (Received February 18, 7.30 p.m.) London, February 17. During the debate on the food supply in the House of Commons, Mr. W. Runciman, President of the Board of Trade, stated that there had been no unnatural withholding of foodstuffs by British farmers. Carriers were not responsible for the increase in the price of chilled meat. He would not hesitate to embark upon a scheme for the State control of ships if it would be to the national advantage, but the embarkation upon new methods at the present time would make things tenfold worse.
