ALLIES GAINING GROUND.

MANY ATTACKS REPULSED.

Wellington, January 21

The Prime Minister has received the following from the High Commissioner, in London, dated Janu-

ary 21: —

Paris reports state that the allies recaptured yesterday the. trenches north of Notre Dame de Lorette, taking 100 prisoners.

The enemy attacking south of Th>pval, in the region of Albert, reached the allies' wire entanglements, and were then repulsed. Three attacks at La Boiselle met with the same fate.

In the Argonne district a German attack on La Fontain aus Charmes was repulsed ia a hand-to-hand tight.

In an earlier message the High Commissioner reported as follows: — Paris reports state that artillery duels have been general between the sea and the Somme. In the region of Nicuport. there was a lively duel. The enemy vainly attempted to destroy a bridge at the mouth of the Yser. The allies succeeded in demolishing a portion of the defences, also some auxiliary works, and a farm near St. Georges, which' the enemy had strongly fortified.

In the La. Grurie woods the enemy violently attacked one trench. The allies' troops recoiled for an instant, but recaptured it by two energetic counter-attacks, and subsequently took the whole position, which they are now holding.

At St. Hubert the Germans blew up a salient on Jhe north-east of the allies' trenches, but the troops rushing into the connection between the outlets prevented the enemy from gaining access-
