FLAGS AT SCHOOLS.
EDUCATION BOARD'S ACTION.
PROVISION FOR FLAGPOLES
The members of the Auckland Education Board have expressed themselves in favour of flying the national flag over all the schools of the country. At yesterday's meeting of the board the chairman, Mr. G. J. Garland, gave notice of motion on the subject, but the board was so unanimous in its approval of the sentiments expressed that it waived the question of notice, and the proposal, after a brief discussion, was referred to the Finance Committee.
The motion was worded as follows : — " (1) That when new schools are being built provision be made for the erection of a flagpole, either attached to the building or as a separate structure as Circumstance* may warrant.
" (2) That, in view of the highly-impor-tant issues arising from the due observance of the board's regulations having reference to saluting the. flag, teachers and committees be notified that the board is prepared to liberally subsidise local efforts having for its object the provision of a flagpole and flag for the use of the school community.
"(3) That, a circular be issued to headteachers and committees embodying the foregoing resolutions and emphasising the obligations resting on all concerned in the matter of bringing home to pupils the full and true meaning of the flag and all that it stands tor and represents in the history of our- national life and progress."
