COAL MINE TO CLOSE.

NEW PIT AT HIKURANGI.

EIGHTY MEN AFFECTED.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Whangarei. Wednesday. The Northern Coal Company's new mine at Hikurangi will be closed dawn at the end of this month. The primary cause is the cessation of work at Limestone Island, ia con.-fquence of the recent fire there. Some 600 to 700 toDs of coal were supplied to the cement works on the bland every week from the mine, and it is stated that the stoppage of the large order, coupled with the falling off of trade generally, has made it necessary for the coal company to close down. It is hoped, however, that the discontinuance of work at the mine will be only temporary. About SO employees are affected by the decision.
