JERMYN STREET SCHEME.
EARLY START POSSIBLE
It is possible that the .Termyn Street scheme to provide a new traffic outlet from the city will he put in hand shortly. The Mayo: - has asked the city engineer to report, to the Works Committee of the City Council next Thursday as to when he will ho able to commence actual operation? in lO.'ineition with the scheme. Mr. Bush ha." also been requested to furnish information as to what portion of the arc:, would be affected first, and whether he proposes to cany out the operations' by contract or day labour. A sketch plan and a description of the work propose.: is also to be prepared by the engineer far the guidance of the committee. The Mayor .stated yesterday that as the properties required in furtherance of the scheme were already vested by Gazette in tie City Council, lie saw no reason why -he work of bringing the scheme, into being should not be begun at once. Next week. Mi. Parr said, he had an appointment to me, t several of the landowners concerned, who were ottering to sell their properties rathe; than contest cases in the Compensation Court.
During the next two months the Mayor proposes to give special attention to this work, and he expressed the. hope that a good start would be made with the scheme before hi.- term of office expired. He looked upon the Jermyn .Street scheme as the most important work the council had undertaken in the past few years.
