THE TALK OF PEACE.

SOCIALIST CONFERENCE. LITTLE HOPE FOR PRESENT. Copenhagen, January 19, The first conference bearing on the war convened by tho Socialist parties in the neutral States was attended by representatives from Holland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Italy. Resolutions were passed declaring that public opinion was horror-stricken at the slaughter and far-reaching ravages, and demanding that immediate steps be taken to shorten the war. Several delegates pointed out the impossibility of concluding peace under the existing conditions, and admitted that the allies could not move in the direction of peace while a single German soldier remained on the soil of France, Belgium, or Poland.

POPE'S PRAYER FOB PEACE. "THIS REIGN OF TERROR." Times and Sydney Sun Services. (Received January 20, 7.30 p.m.) London, January 19. The prayer for peace written by the Popo includes the following passage:—"On earth Thou hadst feelings of tenderness and pity for human misfortunes, so in this grey hour for us of melancholy, hatred and terrible massacres may Thy heart be moved by pity for mothers trembling for their children, for orphaned families, and for the misery of Europe. Inspire Governments and peoples, 0 God, with Thy counsels, and will that mrti again give the kiss of peace in this reign of terror."
