SUMMER RACING CARNIVAL

DERBY DAY AT ELLERSLIE. REPUTATION WINS BLUE RIBAND. A SURPRISE IN A.R.C. HANDICAP. RECORD TOTALISATOR RECEIPTS The New Year opened auspiciously yesterday for the Auckland Racing Club, and the third day's racing of the summer meeting took place under cloudless skies and in the presence of a large throng of people. Among the visitors were the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth, Right Hon. Andrew Fisher, and his party; the Prim© Minister of New Zealand, Right Hon. W. F. Maesey; Hon. W. H. Herries, Minister for Railways; Hon. J. A. Boyd, M.P. for Henty, in the Commonwealth Parliament; and Sir James Carroll. There were also many Southern sportsmen present, including Sir George Clifford, president of the Racing Conference.

In spite of the recent dry weather the grounds at the charming racecourse were very beautiful. Flower-beds all a-bloom gave pleasing variety to the trim lawns and the new drives from the Green Lane entrance, with the trees of varied foliage and the lovely flowering plants, called forth much admiration.

Great crowds of picnickers sheltered beneath the trees on the hill. The grandstand and lawn presented a remarkable appearance with the large concourse of people who gathered there, and the lawn was decidedly picturesque, as hundreds of ladies, dressed in handsome costumes, promenaded amid the dainty flower gardens. During the day there was some excellent racing and closely-contested finishes. Reputation added to his brilliant record by winning the Great Northern Derby, easily out-distancing his competitors. The j victory of the black son of Martian proved exceedingly popular.

That there is plenty of money in Auckland was made evident by the fact that another totalisator record for one day's racing in the Dominion was established. The sum of £67,257 10s was passed through the machines, an increase of £3477 10s on the amount invested on the corresponding day of last year. The totalisator investments for the first- three days of the meeting total £184,538 10s, as compared with £172,394 for the first three days of the summer meeting last year. Following are the results of yesterday's racing: —

Reputation and Balboa following in that order. Further than that Bedford increased his advantage there was no marked alteration in the running down, the straight, and Bedford was still well out in front when the bottom stretch was Teached. When fairly on the way up the back stretch Reputation ran up and joined Bedford, the pair racing together until just before the threefurlong post, where Balboa was running third. Reputation came into the straight with a good lead, while Balboa, who had ran up second, was making a strong effort. The son of Varco was never, however, in a position to seriously challenge Reputation, who ran home an easy winner by three lengths. Balboa was three lengths in advance of Don Francisco, who rushed past Bedford in the last hundred yards, securing third place. Time, 2m 36 2-ss. The official timekeeper. Mr. J. K. Beldame was favourite Hyettus and Vocatior. were a bit fractious at the post, which caused much delay, and when they were despatched Iliad's Hero and Mount Victoria were showing; out in front. This pair practically led tiS tho five furlong post,, when Iliad's Hero went to the lead and came into the straight well in advance. Once head* were turned for home. Tinopai cculd be seen coming, and insido the distance had the race in hand, winning by two lengths, Castalia third the same distance away, and Vocation fourth. Beldame was caught in the tapes and was pulled up. Time, lm 26 3-ss. NOTES ON THE RACING. . The scratching pen was busy in connection with the Ferguson Handicap, the field being reduced from 16 to 10. Soultane was singled out for most attention, Belasco ruling second in demand, with Loloma next. The summing up in favour of Soultane was amply justified, for the son of Soult was first away, and he remained in command throughout, winning comfortably from Coleraine-

In a field of half a dozen saddled up to contest the New Year Hurdle Race, Heroford was made favourite, with Admiral Soult, Spalfish, and Cloudy Dawn most extensively backed of the others in that order. Spalfish went out early to win his race, and when he jumped the fifth hurdle two lengths in front of Cloudy Dawn, whom he had beaten for pace in the middle stage, a victory for the top-weight seemed highly probableThere was, however, a sudden transformation when the sixth hurdle came to bo negotiated, for Spalfish ran in a bit too close to the obstacle, which brought him down. Admiral Soult held a slight advantage at the last fence, but there was a strong rally in favour of Hereford at this point, as the son of Fontenoy leaped the fence almost level with his Auckland rival. Hereford challenged, gamely, but Admiral Soult kept his big rival at bay, and won by a neck Erindale. who burst a blood-vessel, was pulled up at the end of half a mile. After the race J. Doerey. the rider of Hereford, was summoned before the stewards to explain his handling of the favourite. The evidence given showed that both the owner and trainer had backed the horse for a substantial sum. and that the rider had been laid a considerable amount by the owner in the event of a win. The stewards decided to take no further action. A field of nine youngsters was saddled up to contest the Midsummer Handicap, the top-weight, Sutala, being made favourite. Hiero, who unseated his rider, gave a lot of trouble at the post, and when the barrier shot up he tot left, and a like fate- befel lorotoro- Sutala, who was .quickly into his stride, never gave his large circle of admirers any cause for anxiety, and tho son of Elysian running it out very strongly, won his race in easy style from the consistent Housewife.

. The Great Northern Derby was the succeeding event, and when the numbers went up for the classic event, it was found that the held coloured on the card had been reduced by the respective withdrawals of. Camulus Mullingar. and Ringform. When the candidates for blue riband honours came to have their toilets prepared. Reputation was the one ,. tjuicklv sought out; indeed, it might be said that Mr. Bidwill's colt was fairly mobbed. Always a most mannerly colt. Reputation took the marked attention bestowed upon him with the utmost composure, and as the last, strap was tightened the black colt trotted away as though the Derby task before hurt was quite of the every-day order. Reputation fittingly led the parade, and though the son of Martian did not entertain the onlookers with anything approaching the dashing order, the free manner in which he dropped into his stride carried conviction that the severe effort exacted from him on Boxing Day when he endeayou-ed to beat Warstep in the Auckland Cup had left no ill effects. Balboa moved short in his preliminary, and in his Case there was undoubted evidence of sorcn<Jß». Bedford moved attractively, and though Don Francisco and Roumania were popularly counted out in a race of the Derby standard, they both carried a well-trained appearance. It was always a certainty that Reputation would rule a strong odds-on favourite, and the money rolled on to his number at such a rate that when the bells ceased ringing more than half the sum invested on the machine was credited to Mr Bidwill's colt. Of the others Balbrfa was most strongly backed. When Mr. O'Connor gave the word for the contestants to line up at , lhe 4 f. ost ttle tlm « was cut to waste and within a few seconds the welcome cry went up. They're off!" Bedford went out to make the pace, and the son of Bunyan had a three lengths' advantage when they swept past the stand with Reputation and Balboa at the tail of the field. Reputation moved up at the bottom stretch with great dash and as the favourite got level with Bedford at th,e six furlong post a buzz of enthusiasm permeated the air Bedford hulls on gamely to his black opponent until the three furlong post was reached when Reputation strode away, and though Balboa came along gamely, there was never any danger of .his catching the favourite, who won in brilliant style by three lengths. There was a warm cheer for Reputation as Wilson brought the game little Derby winner back to the enclosure, which was repeated

when his trainer. F- D- Jones, led him on to the lawn to -have, the blue riband placed round his neck. This pleasing ceremony wan performed by Miss Gorrie, daughter of t'ae vice-president. Mr- H. T. Gorrie. The Newmarket Handicap brought out a. field of 14. and when speculation opened it was made apparent that the handicapper's effort was popularly considered to have concealed the winner in a masterly manner. Bimeter eventually wound up favourite, Sauci. Postillion, King Lupin, Crown Pearl, and Downham standing out best backed of the others. The starter experienced much difficulty in sotting the field to line up properly, but by the display of much patience Mr. O'Connor eventually got the field away to a beautiful start. Hymettius played the role of pacemaker to the turn, where he retired, and in a stirring finish Bimeter got homo first by a head from Bee, with King Lupin, Postillion, Sauci, and Downham finishing all of a heapTen horses went to the post for the Auckland Racing Club Handicap, for which La Reina was made favourite, Sir Knox, Sea Pink. Allegation. Jolie Fille, Soultikoff, St. Elmn. Monorail, Marshal McDonald, and Gloy being backed in that order. Gloy was found acting the role of pacemaker as the field swept down the straight in good orderJolie Fille took a hand in the pacemaking at the back, where La Reina. improved her position: but the half-mile post found the favourite falling away. The pace was very Bolid across the top stretch. When they got to J.he home turn La Reina was seen to be coming again and finishing well, and a cry went up in her lavourj but Soult's veteran daughter was fairly spun out at the half distance, where Marshal. Mc Donald and Sea Pink shone out. " SeaPink wins!" was all the cry from the main stand when the last few strides were entered upon, but the post was just a little too close for the top weight to score, and Marshal McDonald, who was next the rails, gained the judge's verdict by half a, head amidst a scene of intense excitement. There was only one horse backed ' for less money than Marshal McDonald, and the victory of Mr. T. H. Lowry's representative was a big surprise.

Twenty competitors faced the starter for the Maiden Handicap. Football was made favourite, after whom El Gallo, Camulus, Salvia, Makura, Kaween. Self, Hadj, and Gazette all carried more confidence than the winner. Lady Penury, who won handsomely over the last two furlongs. The favouritewas again going on fast in third position and mev 'be better suited over a longer course Doncaster, a stable companion of the winner, was distinctly prominent in the early stages.

' After her great showing over a mile course on the second day. Beldame was installed favourite for the Glasgow Handicap. Hyettus. Iliad's Hero. Patronale. and 'Tinopai, being backed in that order- The favourite's supporters were deprived of the chance of a financial return by the fact that, she got caught in the tapes as the barrier _ rose. and was quickly pulled up when victory was hopeless. The winner turned up in th« consistent Tinopai. who came fresh from two victories at the Thames, and who came with a greai rush in the straight and easily disposed of Iliad's Hero, and ran the seven furlongs in the great time of Iza 26 8-ss.
