TWO IN THE FIELD.
POSITION AT PARNELL.
OPPOSITION CANDIDATES. Anticipating excitement at Newmarket, where Mr. J. J. Sullivan, an Opposition candidate for the Parnell seat, was announced to deliver a speech and explain the position which had arisen between himself and Mr. J. C. Gleeson, a very large crowd assembled at the local Town Hall, over 200 people being unable to gain admittance. The meeting was quiet and orderly, the Mayor of Newmarket, Mr. D. Teed, presiding. Amidst applause, Mr. Sullivan announced that he would be a candidate for the Parnell seat in the interests of the Opposition. He described in detail how he came to bo in the field and what had passed between himself, Mr. Gleeson, ana the LiberalLabour League. He concluded by contending that he had been misled and put in an unfortunate position. He had asked the previous evening to be released from his word and the men who could have done that were silent. He had said that "under the circumstances" he would retire, but the "circumstances" were not clear,' and that was' why he now contested the Parnell seat. Mr. J. R. Lundon moved "That in the opinion of this meeting, Mr. Sullivan is a fit and proper person to be a candidate for the ejection." The motion was seconded by Mr. C. kelson and carried unanimously.
