WELLINGTON.

Tuesday

Simple Sam was brought all the way from New Plymouth and shipped to Blenheim by the Arahura to compete in the Flying Handicap at the Marlborough Placing Club's meeting. Ge.rberga is another Jaranaki horse that is being taken to the meeting.

The Otaki trainer, F. Higgott, took a strong team to Blenheim, consisting of Peroneal, Peronilla, Improve, Alecto, and two lesser lights. Alecto and Improve may both start in the Welter Hack Handicap on Wednesday, when the opposition will include Arlington, who was taken across on Saturday in charge of Trainer J. Avres. Arlington is very well at the present time, and likes the going hard, as it promises to be at Blenheim. C. Pritchard's team for the Marlborough meeting will comprise Mount Victoria, Turna, Eoumania, and probably a maiden performer called Gold Necklace" The lastnamed is a near relative of the one-time champion sprinter Gold Crest, and has a good reputation as a galloper. The —Teacup yearling, which was purchased for 300gns at the sale in Christ-church, was brought to Wellington, and is to be placed under- tTie care of the New Plymouth trainer, J. CTNeil. Wellington visitors to the Iliccarton races are agreed that the imported mare First Glance was easily the best looking thoroughbred competing at the fixture. Mvsteriarch was among the horses to break down at Riccarton, and another North Island horse to go wrong was Multiply, who was badly knocked about in the Otaio Plato on the third day. Karamu horses did not compete with, much luck at Riccarton. Hyettus, after winning on the opening day, seemed to be out of his element in the longer races, and was knocked up on the Saturday. Ryla went wrong in the knees, and " Hyettus never onre got a favourable start. * WANGANTT. Tuesday. . F. Tillev has Bonny Helen, Postillion, and Austin engaged in the principal handicaps at the Auckland Summer Meeting, and will probably take up one or two others, including Mia Cara for the Derby if she throws off her soreness in time. Had the daughter of Boniform been able to start in the Oaks at Riccarton she must have been hard to beat, in fact would most likely have won. It is to be hoped her trouble will not prove serious, as she is a real good filly, and should win some big races for Mr. Wire Tokena.

Postillion did not run up to expectations at Riecarton.

Bonny Helen's performance in winning J the Metropolitan Handicap was a sterling one, and stamps the daughter of Helen • Portland as quite in the best class. Had she not gone amiss in her preparation for tho New Zealand Cup she must have been hard to beat in that event. She is engaged in tho Auckland Cup, arid is sure to be much fancied for that event, as she can stay the distance all right. Another of Tiller's team in Ardent won the Randolph Handicap in fine style, still further emphasising what a good ond he is. Both Ardent and Bonny Helen were well backed by Wanganni sports. The big gelding Mahlstick is in work again, having thrown off the effects of the injury to his stifle which he recently sustained. The son of Maniapoto was galloping in fine form prior to his enforced spell, and he may pick up a race or two for W. Rayner during the Christmas meetings. } Sweet Van is going along steadily in her work, and promises to be in excellent trim by the time the Woodville meeting comes round.

Tairangi, Grandson, and Aniako had a spin over the hurdles together on Saturday, the two latter especially jumping splendidly and finishing on even terms. Aniake is very well, and should run prominently in his engagements at Feilding. Grandson is improving rapidly, and promises to make a success of the hurdling game. J. Pcachey has St. Gate, Fidessa, Serenity, and Euroeo in steady work. The former has not been asked to do much since the Waverley meeting, but is looking very well indeed. Fidessa is also going along nicely. Serenitv is big and lusty, bnt lie will not be wanted until the autumn, by which time he should be in good trim again. Euroco is doing steady work, hut it will be some time before he is ready.

M. Gardiner brought G rattan Lome after the Auckland Spring Meeting, but Fisher was left, in tho North for the Talc ftp un a and Auckland summer meetings. Oral tan did not show his best form atEllerslie, where he got a bad bump on the second day. He -will probably bo seen out at tho Feilding meeting, where lie is engaged in the weight-for-age event, sir furlongs, a distance which suits him nicely.
