WIFE WHO RAN AWAY.
UNDEFENDED DIVORCE CASE,
Ax undefended divorce case came before Mr. Justice Cooper at the Supreme Court yesterday. A battery hand at Waihi., Robert Polkinghorne (Dr. B. D. Bamford), applied for a dissolution of his marriage with Annie Polkinghorne, Rowland Vowles being named as corespondent.
The petitioner stated that he married the respondent at Thames in 1902, and they lived at Waihi for two years. Later they moved to Waikino, where Vowles, who was petitioner's cousin, came to live with them. At Christmas, 1907, the witness and his wife came to Auckland for a holiday, the idea being that thev should stay with Mrs. Polkingliorne's sister, but upon arrival in Auckland petitioner's wife had insisted on staying with Sir. and Mrs. Vowles, sen. When the witness returned to the country his*wife remained in Auckland, and upon the petitioner's return to Auckland a few days later she had disappeared. He was then shown a letter, which indicated that his wife and Vowles intended to leave New Zealand. Later he received from his wife a registered letter containing £50, which, although deposited in her name at the bank, she maintained was his money. It had transpired that the respondent and co-rospondent had lived together at Kawakawa as man and wife.
Corroborative evidence was given, and His Honor granted a decree nisi, to bo moved absolute in three months.
