COATES CUP.
The St. George's Rowing Club held its opening day on Saturday afternoon, under ideal conditions. There wa3 a large attendance, and great interest was evinced in the races for the Coates challenge cup, which was eventually secured by Cozens's crew. The details are:—First Heat: Cozens, F. S. NORTH SHORE CLUB. . The North Shore Club officially opened its season on Saturday afternoon. There X 4B a good attendance, and the president, Mr. W. A. Bowler, declared the season open. He pointed out that although they had only eight crews competing in the trial fours, the dub had eight crows in the expeditionary force, and that was a fact of which they were all proud. During the afternoon Mr. Bowler presented the Smith challenge shield which was won by a North Shore crew, to Mr. W. Mcllwraith. Tho races for trophies presented by the president resulted as follows:—First Heat: G. Barrett, G. Wilding, R. Marks, B. Emerah, 1; G. MoMahon, F. Gallagher, R. Folks, J. Wall, 2. Also started: C. Fowler, R. Kessell. H. Bailey, W. Quayne; and L. Spinley, G. Croll, G. Dawson, and J. Ford, Second Heat: B. Rutledge, R. Harvey, R. Spinley, D. Dygan, 1; W. Mcllwraith, P. Weston, J. Paul, H. Wright, 2. Also started: A. Stephenson, C. Bennett, C. Chapman, and J. Costello. Final: W. Mcllwraith, P. Weston. J. Paul, H. Wright. 1; G. Barrett, G. Wilding, R. Marks, B. Emerali, 2. The other two crews Qualified to start in the final, McMahon's and Rutlodge's, lost all chance they had by fouling at tne start. WEST END CLUB. The members of the West End Club rowed a trial fourß race on Saturday for trophies presented by the committee. The following is the result:—First Heat: Ross, Hunt, Verron, Reed, Campbell, 1; Frazer, Lye, Todd, Thompson. 2; Glasson, Barber, Jerrons, McCorkindalc, 3; Mcßoberts, Stonex, Teller, Mennie, 4. Won by half a length, with a length between second and third. Second Heat: Dawes, Bell, Nicholson.,Thompson, 1; Parker, DeAudney, Robertson', Green, ' 2; Cole. Jerrons, Goldor, Cartwright, 3; Keane, Virtue. Ross, Poore, 4. Won by a canvas, with half a length between second and third. Final: Ross, Hunt, Verron Reed. Warden,. 1; Dawes, Bell, Nicholson. Thompson, Whitcombe, 2. Won by a length. WHANGAREI .REGATTA. [BY TUXEGEATH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Whangakei, Saturday. At the annual meeting of the Whangarei Regatta Club held last night, it was decided to give trophies only as prizes at the regatta on New Year's Day, and to devote any surplus to the Patriotic Fund. The proposal met with general opposition from representatives of the Whangarei Rowing Club, who contended that without cash prizes, tho Auckland rowing clubs would not enter crews for races. Their counter proposal was that the regatta club should reduce prize-money by 25 per cent. only, and then give surplus, if any, to Patriotic Fund.
