SPORTS CARNTVAE.

A most successful sports carnival was held in the Auckland Domain' on Saturday afternoon Tinder the auspices of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union, the proceeds being in aid of the Belgian Relief Fund The weather was mild, and about 12,000 people spant a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. A number of ladies sold sweets and refreshments from stalls, and an. auction sale of various articles which had' been donate* to the Belgian Fund was held. As the result of the carnival the fund should be considerably augmented. The various events and displays were got off promptly. Perhaps the most popular event of -the afternoon, judging by the enthusiastic applause, was a aeries of Maori hakas, by members of the Maori contingent at present in camp. A number of athletic events exclusively for Maoris were included in the programme, and were most interesting. A sensational feat was performed by " Marvou,'' who glided from the tree-tops to the other side of the ground hanging by his teeth to a pulley suspended from a wire. Another popular feature was a quickstep competition between four drum and fife bands. A clubswinging display was given by SergeantMajor Eva, and an exhibition of baseball, by Auckland exponents of the American national game, was watched with interest.
