RUSSIANS SHELL A MOUNTAIN RAILWAY.
BURNING TRAINS CRASH DOWN INTO VALLEY.
HUNDREDS OF AUSTRIANS CRUSHED TO DEATH.
Petrograd, October 20,
A terrible panic occurred at Tchortkoff, situated at the foot of the Carpathians, when the Russians suddenly rained fire over the Austrian defenders. A fierce artillery duel ensued on the surrounding ridges. The inhabitants thronged the railway station as the conflict increased in deadliness, but many Austrian soldiers and officers rushed the station, and evicted women and children from a train standing at the platform Their places were taken by panic-stricken troops, and the train then ascended the mountain.
A Russian shell smashed the locomotiv- as it was nearing the summit, and the train rolled down, crashii $ into a second train. Both were rapidly descending into the valley when a fresh shell fired the carriages. The trains continued to descend with their burning victims aboard, crushing to death hundreds and throwing the remnants into the station. The Austrian Army was dispersed and the town occupied.
