RUSSIANS INFLICT HEAVY LOSSES ON THE GERMANS
TWO DIVISIONS OF THE ENEMY ANNIHILATED. GERMANS RETREATING THROUGH FOREST AND QUAGMIRE. [Received October 2, 12,10 a.m.) Petkogbad, September 30. The first two German divisions in the battle at Druskeniki have been annihilated. Fighting on the East Prussian frontier extended ' along a hundred mile front. All the German attempts to force the passage of the River Niemen were repulsed. The forestof Augusto-wa, through which the Germans are now ' retreating, extends 24 miles from north to south, and 35 miles from ' east to west, and is intercepted by a canal connecting the Niemen, the Vistula, and the shedded lakes. Heavy rain latterly reduced some' - parts of the district to quagmire. ~ The Russians .operating in. theforest attacked the German flank with a view to cutting their com- '■ .1 1 munications. German barbarities in Russian Poland have provoked reprisals. Three German officers' and 19 soldiers were hanged oh' trees at one place to expiate the hanging of six Russian peasants. ~. u ' ! '.-.
