HOW THE FRENCH FORTRESS OF MAUBEUGE WAS TAKEN.

TOWN BOMBARDED BY ENEMY FOR TWELVE DAYS.

THOUSAND SHELLS FELL ON RAILWAY STATION IN NIGHT.

Paris, September 16.

The investment of the French frontier fortress of Maubeuge commenced on August 26, and the first shell was fired upon the town on the following day. The main attack was made upon the east and north of the town, and the heavy siege artillery of the invaders completely destroyed the Bonssoir, Esserts, and Cerfontaine forts, and also the earthworks at Rocq.

Some of the forts surrendered in 24 hours, whilo others held out for two days. The bombardment of the town lasted 12 days, and over a thousand shells fell on the railway station in one night. The loss of life was slight.

Manbenge is a fortified town in Northern France, 23£ miles south-east of Valenciennes, and about two miles from the Belgian frontier.
