PRICES Of FOODSTUFFS.
SUGAR AND BAKING POWDER. DEFERRED TO COMMISSION. [by telegraph.—special correspondent.] Wellington, Tuesday. i A qttestion in regard to the price of ■sugar and the Colonial Sugar Company : was asked in the House this evening by J Mr. Witty (Riccarton). He inquired i whether the Prime Minister was aware ' that the company was practically evadj ing the Trust Act by appointing mer ' chants as ther agents and allowing them I a commission of 3i per cent., which was | equal to a. rebate of about 10s a ton on present prices. The Prime Minister said ' this matter would be referred to the Food- ' stuffs Commission. A rise in the price of baking powder j was also referred to by Mr. Witty. He : said that it had been raised from 10a * i tin to about 2s 6d. • The Prime Minister ! said that baking powder would probably come under the heading of drugs. It would be referred to the Foodstuffs Commission. Mr. Witty : Does not baking powder come under the heading of food? It is hardly a drug. Mr. Massey : It is certainly not a drug in the market just now. (Laughter).
