THE UNEMPLOYED.

STATEMENT BY MAYOR.

WORK OF CITIZENS' COMMITTEE.

A_statement regarding the question of dealing with unemployment in Auckland during tho war was maJe by the Mayor last night.

''I notice an advertisement in the press notifying all the unemployed of Auckland to report at the Trades Hall to-day between 10 a.m. and 12 noon," said tho Mayor. "I am desired by tho executive of tho Citizens' Committee to state that this advertisement is not authorised by the Citizens' Committee. On inquiry from Mr. Rosser at tho Trade* Hall as to tho mean-

ing of this advertisement I learned that it emanated from tho Trades Hall secretaries, who expressed themselves as desirous of securing information for tho Citizens' Committee. I think that very possibly tho

Citizons' Committee will direct all applications to bo made to its secretary personally, and ho will get all tho information

that is necessary. I mako this explanation becauso it is necessary to remove any misunderstanding that may ariee through this advertisement. It must bo clearly understood at this stage that it is not the duty of tho Citizens' Committee to find employment for all tho men who may choose

to call at the, Trades Hall this morning. To-day at noon the Local Affairs Committoo meets to consider, among other questions, the matter of unemployment."
