UNDER UNION RULES.

BOXING.

NOTES AND COMMENTS.

Good progress has been made by the Auckland Athletic Union in regard to cheap fares on boats lor competitors and officials, and a pronouncement will lie made at the annual meeting of the union. Arrangements are also being made with hotelkeepers whereby competitors may obtain rebates on the ordinary hotel charges This refers to hotels in country centres, and also to Auckland City, so that visiting competitors registered with the union may obtain concessions in town. In order to' provide against imposition, coupon ticket? will he issued to competitors, .signed by the president and secretary of the union, with the seal affixed. The issue of concession tickets will be at tno discretion of the union otherwise any per son could register as a competitor and claim the reductions. The Auckland executive is also endeavouring to obtain similar concessions for officials of country clubs and union officials. These privileges will have a yearly currency, and although the primary object was for use m connection with sports meetings, the holders of tickets may secure the advantages anv time they travel. According to the annual report of the Otago Centre. 22 clubs are affiliated to that body and 505 competitors registered, a falling" off of 29 on last years totais. Much comment was made because the Dunrdin Caledonian Society did not send a delegate to the union meeting, ° ir ™° following motion was carried :-" Tho executive of the union regrets that the Caledonian Society has not sent a delegate to represent it at the annual meeting of the centre." Tho mover, Mr. Polwarth, said ho thought the society had cast a slur upon the Athletic Union by not sending a representative, particularly as the union had taken up the matter of fighting the trouble when Postle and Donaldson had broken their contract by not running on the Caledonian Grounds, and had, as a result of tho union's action, been iined £25 each. Mr. J. Carroll, who seconded the motion, thought they wore entitled to get somo explanation from the society. . At one time the Dunedin Caledonian Society wa:i looked upon as tho leading athletic sports body in Now Zealand, and its annual games extended over three days. Athletics changed of late years down South, and this society had, at its January meeting, only two running events for professionals, and only eight registered competitors came forward.

According to the balance-sheet, the Exhibition sports meetings were a financial success, and credit is due to those who were chiefly instrumental in conducting them. It will also be remembered that some of the attractions wero responsible for increasing the general gate receipts at the Exhibition. For instance, the pipe band contest was a goncral attire'ion to town, while on the afternoon of the contest there was no froo admission to the Inhibition. Since tho day that the Postle-Donaldson match drew 20,000 people to tho Domain, the Exhibition fixture has been tho chief event in Auckland athletic circles.

PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

The entries received by the Northern Boxins: Association for the provincial championships have been added to by the nomination of L. Shaw for the light and Welter-weight classes. The Taumaranui Association has withdrawn the nomination of Drnmmond, who wan entered for the bantamweight class, but will send two feather-weights, J. Newton and J. McNicbol. G. R. Ilook, who nominated for the heavy-weight class, has transferred to the middle-weight divisiott

TAUMARANUI ASSOCIATION. Tbe Taumaranui Association will hold a tournament on August 5. The committeo is endeavouring to match 'Leu. Robinson, of Gisborne, and Que,. Venn for the professional feather-weight title. Taumaranui lias sufficient good amateur talent to make tho preliminary bouts interesting. NOTES AND COMMENTS. H. Marrjuet is in steady work in preparation for his match with Bert Lowe. Alex. Pooley, who arrived from Sydney on Sunday, b?s announced that ho will chnllengo the winner. ■ Pooley has returned to Auckland after almost three years' absence. He came back as he went, in the full flush of victory. Pooley's win at His Majesty's Theatre over Paddy Doran, in tho final of the Australasian heavy-weight amateur championship, will long bo rememberod by local boxing enthusiasts. Just before leaving .Sydney Pooley won the final of the Olympia heavy-weight championship. He beat five men during tho progress of that series. Bill Rudd was one who succumbed to Poolev.

The preliminary bouts at the Waikato Association's tournament on Wednesday gave an indication of what some of the country amateurs can do. Morrison, who previously came from Timaru, but is now residing at To Aroha, will compete in the local championships. Ho is one of tho bustling sort, with a hard swing. Kelland, a Taumarunui weight., is a good sort, who should have a chance in the provincial championships. G. Olsen has notified the Northern Association that he will not bo able to get into condition in time for tho tournament next month, and his match with Frank Holt has, therefore, been declared off.

The New Zealand Boxing Council has decided to bring before, tho Wanganui Conference the question of the definite legalisation of the controlling authority of boxing in New Zealand. The secretary of the Christcbnrch Sports Club was instructed, at a recent meeting, to match, if possible, Mitchell and Olson, both of Auckland, for August 13. The Canterbury Centre is making an application for the 1915 championships. The Canterbury championships will be held on July 13 and 14.
