THE CITY COUNCIL.
• *• TRAMWAY CENTRE-POLES.
QUESTION OF REMOVAL.
NO ACTION TO BE TAKEN'
The Auckland City Council met last night. Present. The deputy Mayor (Mr. John Court). Miss E. Melville, and Messrs. B.
Tudohopo, M. Casey, J. M. MennSa, G. Bead, H. N. Bagnall, P. G. Nerheny, A. J. Entrican, R. T. Michaels, A. Hall
Skelton, F. E. >T. Gandin, and R. S. Briggs. A suggestion was recently made by Mr. Trevethirk that the tram-polos in tin
centre of Hobson Street should be removed to the tides of the thoroughfare.
The city engineer (Mr. W. E. Bush) reported that the Tramways Company had advised that the cost of carrying out tba desired change from Customs Street to Karangahapo Road would amount to approximately £1700, not including the coat of any alterations necessary to electricity cables and telegraph wires which exist along both sides of the street for the greater portion of tbe distance. Tho necessary pies would have to bo specially imported, which could not bo dono probably under six months.
The Works Committee recommended that as tho amount required was not available no action be taken.
Mr. Trev:thick ox pressed regret at tho committee's recommendation, and pointed out that if a fatal .accident occurred through a collision with one of the poles, tho city might have to bear a heavier expenditure than would ontailod in tho removal of the poles. The recommendation was adopted.
IMPROVING A ROAD,
THE ESTIMATED COST.
Recently a complaint was received by the council as to the state of Basque Road, and the city engineer suggested that the Eden Terrace Road Board should first, kerb and channel its side of the thoroughfaro. The formation could then be undertaken at the joint expense of the city and tho Road Board. Last night the engineer reported to the council that the total rc&t of kerbing, channelling and forming the road would bo £780. The council's contribution should bo £360, and that of Edon Terrace £420, the difference being due: (1) To the fact that the Edon Terraoc side, between Dundonald and Exmouth Streets, had not yet been cnannellod ; and (2) to the need for a heavy retaining wall between Dundonald and Exmouth Streets to support tho filling. It was decided to send a copy of the engineer's reiwrt to the Edon lorraoo Road Board.
ST. MARY'S BEACH.
THE CHARGE FOR BOATS.
Permission was Bought by Collinga and Bell to place a few launches at the bottom o! St. Mary's Road. Tho city engineor reported that it had been the custom to haul boats up on this road for the winter month# without any charge being mado. Eight boats had &1ready been hauled up, and there was room on the beach for about six moro. He recommended that permission be granted I/O haul boatfl up on the beach during thn ■ninths of April to October, and that a, -•, .rgo of 10b and h per boat bo mado | according to bI/.0. [ Tho suggestion wan adopted.
MANHKAU ROAD
AGREEMENT WITH REMUERA.
Advico was received from th* Remuera Road Board tbat an agreement existed between the late Parnell Borough Council and i/ho board fur the maintenance of Manukau Road between Ayr and Goorgo Streets for the sum of £12 per . annum. Tho board presumed that the council would agTeo to thoso terms. The city engineer reported that the amount of £12 for maintenance wag totally inadequate, and tho portion of the road referred to would require the expenditure of a considerable sum to put it in good order. He was going into the matter and would report as to a suitable contribution from Remuera for maintenance.
The matter -was referred to tho Works Committee.
HOMES FOR EMPLOYEES.
DIFFICULTY AS TO AIR SPACE.
The city engineer reported that it was practically impossible to erect flats for council workmen in Patteson Street, as the allotment had only a maximum depth of 50ft, with a 50ft frontage. It was, therefore impossible to erect flats which would comply with the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act regarding air space. He had prepared designs for three cottages on the site, one of which would do for the stable foreman. These cottages could be erected for about £350 op £400 each. The report was referred to the Workers' Homes Committee. | MISCELLANEOUS.
LAYING A TRAMWAY.
Tho Auckland Harbour Board applied for a license to lav down and maintain a traimyay across Beaumont Street and along the side street to connect the slipway with the workshops. The application was referred to the Works Committee. The council .decided to inform the Harbour Board that it was not prepared to accept tho dedication of Halsey Street, on the Freeman's Bay reclamation, for 12 months. Fourteen tenders, ranging from £517 to £716, were received for the supply of a motor-car for the waterworks department. The estimate was £57(1. The tenders were referred to the Finance Committee. Four tenders were also received for the supply of metal, and these were roferred to the engineer to tabulate.
