AFTERNOON SHIFT QUESTION MEN QUITE DETERMINED. By Telegraph—Press Association— (Received Juno 2. 9.30 D.m.) Sydxe?, Juno 2. Tnn executive officers of the Employees' Federation state that the Maitland miners are determined the afternoon shift must end should tho heavens fall. The president declares that no industry lends itself more to nationalisation than the coal trade. Nino of the collieries where tho men refused to work the afternoon shift were closed to-day, and about 4000 men have been thrown out of work. Both sides are
determined, but roticent. The men expect to obtain tho support of tho Australian Union Federation, and declare that if this is forthcoming they can win. There is no present indication that a. strike is being prepared for in other districts.
