ANOTHER BURGLARY.
VISIT TO RUTLAND STREET. LITTLE MONEY SECURED. DAMAGE TO PREMISES. Burglars are still at work in the city. The building occupied by Messrs. G. and H. Inglis and Co., plumbers, of Rutland Street, was broken into some time during Tuesday .night. The intruders secured the sum of 35s in silver, and the damage they caused will cost more than this to repair. '
On his arrival at work yesterday morning, Mr. G. Inglis mt once saw that the premises, which are two-storeyed, had been ransacked. The large and thick glass plate in the upper portion 01 the substantial main door had been completely broken out, the pieces being scattered over the ground, while the door itself had been considerably damaged by a jemmy, in an attempt to force the lock and to make an opening in the bottom panelling. Judging by the marks left by boots on a case, an unsuccessful effort had also been made to prize open the office window.
Having gained admission over the top of the door, - the burglars again brought their jemmy into play to make an entrance into the office. Drawers were turned out, and the office reduced to a state of chaos. The burglars secured a tin cashbox, which was in the desk. Taking this upstairs to a bench, they easily wrenched it open and took the contents. Various valuable papers were left strewn about on the bench.
The occupant of a neighbouring building said he noticed a light in the premises about half-past seven o'clock on Tuesday evening, but, thinking the men were working late, he paid no attention to it. The police are investigating tiie affair. The same premises were entered some months ago, but entrance was not gained to the office. The premises stand some distance back from the street frontage, and are surrounded by a high corrugated iron fence.
