BOXING.
CANCELLATION OF PERMIT. ACTION BY POLICE EXPLAINED.
In connection with the cancellation of the permit to hold a, boxing tournament in the Town Hall at Easter, Mr. ,Moss Ballin, hon. secretary of the Northern, Boxing Association, has receiveu the following telegram from Superintendent Ellison, of Wellington:—"The permit is withheld until it has been satisfactorily established that no private individual or syndicate has any interest in any exhibition or contest to be held under the auspices .of the association and that no agreement or understanding has been arranged between the association and any other party." The position now is that unless Mr. Mitchell, who took over Mr. Bris Doyle's contract with the Northern Association, retires from the field no boxing contest will be held in Auckland until July. It wa£ stipulated in the agreement between the association and Mr. Doyle that the association was not to hold a contest until the expiration of the term. It will be remembered that prior to the Exhibition, Mr. Doyle approached the association regarding the holding of several big professional contests, the purse for each to be £1000. The association could . not see its way clear at the time to offer such big purses, and Mr. Doyle agreed to finance the contests and take 90 per cent, of the net profits. Subsequently he sold his rights to Mr. Mitchell. The association has carried out its part of the contract in arranging a contest for Easter, and matching several amateurs, but the police will not sanction a carnival unless it is held solely under the association's auspices.
