GREAT AMERICAN FIRES.

SIX BLOCKS DESTROYED.

LIVES LOST IN PANIC.

By Telesraoh.—Press Association—Copyright

New York, March 14. A fire on the waterfront at Portland (Oregon) on Thursday destroyed six blocks, the damage being estimated at £200,000.

Two steamers, the Cricket, loaded with asphalt, and the Glenroy, with wheat, were destroyed, the crew of the latter being rescued with difficulty.

Helped by tons of sulphur and asphalt stored in the vicinity, the flames spread with amazing rapidity.

A fire broke out yesterday in an Italian boardinghouse in which 50 boarders lived, at Bridgeport (Connecticut). A panic followed, and the police had to use their clubs to drive out the excited occupants, who fought fiercely to escape by the wrong exits.

Three were, burned to death and several were injured in the struggle.
