AUCKLAND AMATEUR, CLUB.

CANTELL WINS CHAMPION CUP.

The fourth carnival of the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club was held at the Domain on Saturday in beautiful weather. There was not a large attendance, but the sports were considerably Defer than usual and some really first-class races were witnessed. A feature of the meeting was the large fields in al! events, which tended to make the various races still more interesting. The Victor Ludorum Cup, which is competed for annually by members of the club, was won by N. M. Cantell, who scored six points by running second in the cne mile and two miles events. The cup was presented to the member of the club gaining most points during the afternoon.

■V pleasing feature of the meeting was the cycling. Cycle races, as a rule, are not popular with spectators, but on Saturday every rian amongst the large number of competitors was plainly a "trier" and consequently some first-class racing was witnessed Following were the results: — IOOYcs Handicap. All qualified started. Stewart finished very fast, but was beaten by a foot Time lOsec. 880 Yds Handicap. Trophies £2 2s and £1 Is: N. R. Jacobsen, 65yds, 1; C. N. Jacob sen, 75yds, 2. 18 others started. Hindman (50yds) and C. Reid (60yds) moved up at the beginning of the second round and it looked as though they were going to fight out the finish. At the furlong distance, however, Hindman retired, and the pace set by the Jucobben brothers proved too much for Reid who finished fourth. The winner ran a capitally judged race and won by 5 yards. Time 1.54.

One Mile Amateur Cycle Handicap. Trophies £2 2s and £1 Is: First heat—A. J. lyman, 55yds, 1; F. N. Brennan, 50yds, 2; W. Cotaett, 30yds, 3. Goodman fell in the second lap. A good race, won by a length. Time 2.32 4-5. Second heat— R. M. Stewart, 50yds, 1; L. Parmenter, 75yds, 2; J O. Robertson, 60yds, 3. Stewart gained a big lead at the beginning of the last lap and won by 50yds. a length separating second and third. Time 2.32 3-5. Final—W. R M Stewart. 50yds, 1; W. Colnett, 40yds, 2'; A J. I yman, 55yds, 3. All qualified started Stewart repeated his performance of sprinting at the start of the last lap and won easily by 20yds. Time 2,33 3-5. 120Yda Maiden. Time, 18s. Final— S Harston scr, 1; M. R. Stewart, owes Byds, l if' , La,r d. rec y da - also started. Stewart hurdled splendidly and was beaten by only 2ft. Time, 16 3-ss. One Mile Walk Handicap. Trophies £2 2s £1 Is: D. Wilson, scr. 1; N. H. W. Thomag, 15yds, 2. Wilson covered the first lap in lm 28s, the second in 3m 10s, and the third in sm. Half-way round the third lap he caught Thomas, who was in the lead, and the pair walked together until the last 100 yds was entered upon, when Wilson forged ahead and won by syds. Time. 6m 48 3-ss. One Mile Handicap. Trophies, £2 2s £1 Is: L. Brett, 15yds, 1; N. M. Cantell, 10yds, 2. Cantell had established a long lead at the end of the second lap, but halfway through the last lap Brett, who was 3yds behind Cantell. commenced to put in a fine sprint, to which Cantell was too tired to respond. Brett won very easily by 20yds. Lane was 20yds further back, third. Time, 4m 45 3-ss.

220 Yds Handicap. Trophies. £2 2s, £1 Is: First heat—A. A. Edwards, 18yds, 1; N. R. Jacobsen, 13yds. 2; C. F. Burns, 17yds, 3. Time, 22 l-ss. Second heat—W. J. Glass, 19yds, 1; J. Crighton, 85yds, 2; H. Wilson, scr, 3. Although the majority of the aix competitors were very small, all gave a first-class exhibition, most of them showing considerable promise. The first two were particularly diminutive lads, but walked pfuckily and correctly. A fine finish saw R. Wilson win by syds, with H. Wilson 3yds behind Crighton. Time, 3m 46 4-ss. One Mile and a-Half Amateur 'Cycle Handicap. Trophies, £2 2s, £1 Is: W. R. M. Stewart. 70yds, 1; F. M Brennan, 75yds 2; H. Neal. 120 yds, 3. The field was bunched until the last lap, when Stewart sprinted ahead, and held his lead to the finish, winning by five lengths. Time, 3m 67 2-ss.

Running Broad Jump Handicap. Trophy, £1 Is: O. Darby, scr (19ft 7in), 1; H. Laird, 6in (18ft 9! in), 2 880Yda Boy Scouts' ' Relay Race. Four trophies, value £1 15s: Birkdale, 1; Eden, 2; Ponsonby No. 1, 3. Time, lm 57a. Two Miles Handicap. Trophies, £2 2s, £1 Is: C C. Francis, Bcr, 1; N. M. Cantell, 40yds, 2; C. Reid, scr, 3. Frcncis and Cantell went into the lead half a-mile from home. Francis put in a fast sprint at the finish, and won by about syds Reid, tne scratch man. although he pul'ed up when the winners finished, went round for another lap to gain third points for the cup. Time. 10m 18 4-ss.

440 Yds Handicap. Trophies, £2 2s, £1 Is: E. S. Harston, 22yds, 1; F. R. Carolan, 24yds, 2. L. J. Mark (scr) ran well, but found the handicaps too great, and he was done 100 yds from home. Harston won by about lyd. Time, 50s.
