MANUKAU COUNTY AFFAIRS.

'APPROACH TO TAMAKI BRIDGE.

A >,nirn>;o of the Manukau County Council tras held yesterday, when there were present: Messrs. H. R. McKenzie (chairman), A. E. Hattaway, A. D. Bell, F. H. Brownhill, J. C. Bryant, and Captain Colheck.

Tho plans of Mr. Moore (engineer to the county) for a new fcrro-concrete bridge on the Howick Road, in place of the old structure at present near the Pakuranjii school, known as Moowey's Bridge, were accepted. The width of the bridge is to be extended from 20ft to 30ft. The engineer was instructed to call for tenders immediately. The proposal to deviate the Howick Road, so as to bring it into alignment with the proposed new Tamaki Bridge, was the subject of a letter from Messrs Buddie and Button, solicitors. They said that their clients were prepared to consent to an exchange of the old road from the existing bridge to its proposed junction with the new road, on certain conditions. The chairman considered that these conditions were very reasonable, and arrangements should be made to come to a definite decision. Mr. Hattaway said, however, that the residents on the Howick side of ihe bridge would still use the old swing bridge, and would therefore require the old road for access. He thought the council would bo wiser to purchase the whole of the intersecting land, and use the surplus land for the erection of workers' homes. The matter was deferred, pending further consideration.

It was decided to ask the Auckland Gas Company for an estimate of the cost of erecting three lamps on the Mangero Road. The Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote asking for the amount of the county's contribution, which was still 'towing, £870 16s 2d, in order that the nubsidy might be claimed before March 31. It, was agreed to forward a cheque immediately.
