There was not much to choose between Miss Durack and a diminutive youth named Purdy. and the majority of the spectators demonstrated that in their opinion the latter had won. Dumper and Enwright had a lead of a lap and a-half, and Masters of nearly a lap, before Hardwick started. Swimming a long easy stroke, the Sydney man at once began to reduce the lead, and after he had covered three laps he had lessened the gap by half a lap. With half the journey gone he was on terms with Masters, and Enwright had dropped out. By the time the eighth lap had Seen covered Hardwick was in the lead, and from then out he did not exert himself, ultimately winning by half a lap from Masters. Dumper did not finish. Time, 5m 51s. Champion had two laps to make up on the leaders when he started, and Smith was swimming strongly half a lap in front of him. For the first two laps there was no appreciable difference, but the front markers then began to drop back. About 20yds separated Champion and Smith, and at one stage it seemed as though the Aucklander would be unable to make up the deficit. Smith swam into tho lead at the end of the eighth lap, and then Champion began to wear him down, ultimately catching bim two laps from home. Champion won amidst great applause by 3yds. Tune, 5m 49 2-6s. Third heat: C. Sinton, 6s 1•' T. Hntcheon, 655, 2. Also started: M C Stranger, 18s; E. Howard, 60s; W. Barris 75s* -'W. Davidson, 755. Won easily. Time, 6m l£ 8-ss. Final : Harold Hardwick (Sydney), scr 1; M. E. Champion, scr., 2. Albo started: F. H. Masters, 255; C. Sinton, 6s. The race was easily the best seen in Auckland for many years. Sinton got away about 20yds behind Masters, who was just on a lap in the lead when the two scratch men set out. In his usual style, Hardwick started off with the crawl, and when the pair had covered two laps he was two yards in front of Champion. He then settled down to a long, steady trudge, but Champion kept to him lap after lap, and it was soon apparent that first honours would rest between these two. Three laps and a-half after the scratch pair had started they had overhauled Sinton, and Masters was accounted for soon after. Three laps later Sinton retired. Champion drew up to within a yard of Hardwick, and the two raced almost neck and neck over the last half of the journey. Hs.rdwick gaining over every turn, and Champion making up the deficiency on the straight run. With two laps to go the excitement was intense, as Champion was still within a yard oi his formidable opponent. On those terms they turned for home, but Hardwick gained on the turns, and eventually won a magnificent race by three yards. Hardwick's time was over 2s faster than the New Zealand record and just 3s outside his best time for the distance, while Champion was within his own New Zealand record time. Time 5m 335.
