BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL.
The Birkenhead Borough Council met last night. Present: Messrs. W. Wallace (Mayor), C. E. Campbell, F- Finch, A. Bartlett, F. M. King, R. Shepherd, and J. P. McPhail.
Mr. W. Gordon Kelly applied to have the water supply extended to Rangatira Road, where it would serve 18 residents. The foreman was instructed to prepare an estimate for laying down a 4in main to this locality.
The Harbour Board wrote agreeing to connect the waiting-rooms on the wharf with the water supply, and suggested that as only a small quantity of water would be used, the council should agree to an annual charge rather than incnr the expense of a meter supply. It was decided to insist upon the board taking the supply of water required by meter. The Mayor stated that at present there were 260 consumers being supplied from the borough's water supply. The question of the advisability of leasing the reclaimed area near the wharf for a recreation reserve was referred "to a committee to report to the next meeting of the council-
It was decided to improve the state of the crossings at the cemetery. It was decided to kerb and channel a portion of the Main Road. It was agreed to accede to the request of the owner to substitute scoria and shell for metal in connection with the road in the subdivision of Lueher's property. Messrs. P. W. Stewart, J. Brook, and W. U. Timewell waited upon the council as a deputation from the Birkdale Recreation Club requesting the council to assist the club to the extent of levelling off the reservoir site, which it was proposed to lay down in lawns, for bowling, croquet, and tennis. The question was referred to the council in committee.
Regarding a request to extend the water main into the Birkenhead Riding of the county, it was decided to inform the applicants that as their properties are outside the borough and a considerable distance from the boundary, the council cannot see its way at present to extend the water main in this direction.
The waterworks engineer reported that 754,810 gallons of water had been pumped during the month of February. The level of Lake Takapuna was 6ft 2jin above high-water sea-level. Subject to the approval of the Northcote Council, it was decided to hold the conference between the two councils on Tuesday week.
