SEAMAN DROWNED.
LOSES LIFE WHEN BATHING. FATALITY OFF MOTUIHI . ISLAND. A man named James Doolan, employed as a seaman on board the- cutter Lee, was drowned while swimming off Motuihf Island yesterday afternoon. The body was recovered some time later by Captain W. Brown, of the Lee, and Captain H. Caspar. In a statement made to the water police, Captain Brown said that the Lee was anchored about five fathoms off the beach in readiness to load sand for Auckland. About 1 p.nu Doolan informed the captain of his intention of having a swim, and jumped into the water, which was about 4ft deep. Captain Brown noticed the deceased swimming about for some time with a plank, and then retired to the cabin. On his return to the deck there was no sign of Doolan, and the plank with winch he had been swimming was washed up on the beach. Captain Brown steered the cutter in shore, and saw Doolan's body resting, on the bottom in about 6ft of water, and about 25ft from the shore. He immediately reported the fatality to Captain Caspar, andHhe body was secured with grappling irons. Doolan was a single man. and resided in Franklin Road, Ponsonby. An inquest will be held to-day.
