LOSSES BY FIRE.

TWO DWELLINGS DESTROYED.

OUTBREAK AT HAMILTON.

[BY TELEGRAPH.— OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] Hamilton, Wednesday. About three o'clock this morning a fire was discovered in a house in Claudelands, owned by Miss Edmiston and occupied by Mrs. Webb. When the alarm was given by the next door neighbours the flames had a strong hold on the interior of the building, and the structure, with its contents, was completely destroyed. As no response could be got from the occupants, it was feared they were incinerated, but later it was found that they had left about half-an-hour earlier to go to Frankton to meet the Main Trunk express. In the absence of the brigade, which received no alarm, the flames spread to the adjoining house, owned by Mr. P. E. Stevens and occupied by Mr. Gray, and it was also soon reduced to ashes, but not until most of the furniture had been removed. Miss Edmiston's insurances were not ascertainable, but Mrs. Webb had £365 on her furniture in the Queensland Office, which included paintings, which she valued at £300. Mr. Stevens s house was insured for £400 in the New Zealand Office, and Mr. Gray's furniture for £175 in the I'hcenix.

TRAINING STABLES BURNED.

HORSES TAKEN OUT SAFELY. [BT telegraph.— 'ASSOCIATION.] CmusTcnrßcn, Wednesday. The stable of E. Cutts, private trainer for Sir George Clifford, was completely destroyed by fire last evening. The fire broke out shortly before 8 p.m., and is supposed to have been caused through wax matches being dropped in the straw in the loft above tne stables. The fire spread rapidly, no water being available, and the whole building was soon a mass of ruins. About 25 horses were in the stable at the time, but all were got out unscathed from their boxes and placed in the paddock adjoining. Among the horses were Autumnus, Antagonist, GlenJinnan, Nightwatch, Heatherbrae, Quarantine, Masterpiece, Stevedore, Boldstroke, Snapdragon, and others. A quantity of harness and other material was destroyed, and Cutts estimates his cash loss at about £1500, without taking into account the disturbance of business. Owners of other stables are offering every assistance. All the horses in Cutts's hands have found quarters- Sir George Clifford's engagements will not be interfered with.
