THE KEEPING OF TERMS.

[BT TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION. ] Dtjnedin, Wednesday. The University Senate resumed its session to-day, the chancellor presiding. The final report of the Entrance Examinations Commfttee contained the following recommendations — That the request of the secondary schools conference, that the fee for re-examination in one subject at the matriculation examination be reduced to one guinea, be granted ; that the list of all successful candidates in the examination be printed in the report of the December Examinations Committee and published in the minutes, and that copies be sent to the principals of schools which have presented candidates as soon as possible after its adoption." The report was adopted. The Science Committee recommended that regulations relating to engineers' travelling scholarship bo amended to read in effect—" That the holder of the scholarship shall, within six months of the award, proceed to some other country to be approved by the chancellor, and there profitably employ his time during the whole term of his scholarship in acquiring knowledge of his profession, and shall, at the end of every three months, furnish to the chancellor, through .the professor in chaise of the School of Engineering of Canterbury College, a full and satisfactory report detailing his employment during the period." The recommendation was agreed to.

The Authors and Periods, Economic! and Commerce Committee recommended —(a) That the professors of English b< thanked for calling the attention of th< senate to the neglect of the instruction! by the examiner m English, and informec that the attention of the university agent in England will be called to the matter (b) that the registrar be instructed t< draw the attention of the university agen' to the fact that, in the English examina tion papers for 1913, practically no atten tion was paid by the examiner to th< suggestion that a choice of question; should be allowed, and that a quantity oi the vowels in the Anglo-Saxon passage! should be carefully marked." The same committee recommended thai the senate adopt the suggestions made bj the principals of the training colleges ir reference to the Habens Prize, viz. •' (a) That the prize be an annual one ol not more than £5; (b) that at least twe years' notice of the subject of the essaj be given." The committee also recom mended that the examiners for the Habeni Prize be For 1914 :T. S. Foster, M.A. C. F. Salmond, M.A ; and G. Hogben M.A : For 1915: J. S. Tennant, M.A B.Sc.; T. A. Hunter, M.A., M.Sc.; anc J. Hogben, M.A. The committee recommended that thi first part of Clause 1 of the statute ol the university terms read : — (1) An] matriculated student of the university whose name is on the books of an affili ated college, and who has attended the lectures and passed ite annual examina tion, shall be deemed to have kept th: terms of the year, provided that, befor< presenting himself for a university tx amiaation, for which the keeping of term! is required, he must have passed the college examination in the subjects h< offers, at a stage corresponding to that oi such university examination.' This wai agreed to. , It was decided that notification of the alterations made in the degree courses bj t.he senate be sent out to the staffs o the colleges not later than Che end ol February. , The senate agreed to grant Artnui Bushby Pearson, D.T.H., Edinburgh anc Glasgow, a diploma of Public Health ir ',he New Zealand University.
