EXPLOSION OF DETONATORS.

VERY 'LITTLE DAMAGE DONE.

>Y TELECRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Huntlt, Wednesday. There is no change in the position at Huntly and, excepting one incident, the town is very quiet. Late last night the noise of several explosions aroused the neighbourhood and many feared that something serious had happened. Upon investigation it was found that several detonators had been thrown at the Naitisiri boardjnghouße owned by tho Taupiri Company. The' damage was slight, only a few of the weatherboards being affected. Five men who, arrived here last night were taken into custody by the police this morning on suspicion. Three were subsequently released the other two being detained on the charge of deserting from ships at Auckland. A:n attempt has been made to persuade tho deputies at both mines to come out on strike, and the following letter, signed by the secretary of the union, has been sent to each man:— have been instiucted to write you regarding the introduction of free labour into the mines of the Taupiri Company. Seeing that other deputies thoughout the mines of New Zeaand do not intend to work with free labour would you kindly let me know your intentions if these tactics are adopted''" It is understood that the deputies, who are all officials of the company, are not likely to como out.
