"BLACK HOLE OF CALCUTTA." In 1756, Surajah Dowlah captured Calcutta. His prisoners, to tho number of over 120, were huddled together into one small room during tho heat of an Indiun night, and deprived, in addition, of water. In the morning nearly the wholo of tho prisoners were dead. Clive arrived on the sceno shortly afterwards with a small army, and by tho battle of Plassey overthrew Surajah Dowlah and established a firm footing for Britain in Bengal.
