THE PAPUANS.
The islanders who are just emerging from the stone < age are superior in many respects to our own ancestors of the stone age, said Mr. Chas. Hedley, assistant curator of the Australian Museum, in a lecture in Sydney last week. The bows and arrows used by the Papuan head hunters were far better than those used by our ancestors at the Battle of Crecy. The Papuans were expert in navigation, agriculture, and trading. Their gardens would put to shame some of the gardens of pre-( sent-day bush-selectors, not to speak of the ancient Britons- The Papuans were excellent mechanics and artisans. They made musical instruments, and there were other evidences of a degree of culture, such as the races of Europe when in the stone age had not attained.
